AIZAWL: Veteran
Congress leader
Lal Thanhawla was sworn-in as the chief minister of Mizoram on Saturday.
Along with him, 11 new ministers were administered the oath by governor Vakkom Purushothaman.
Thanhawla has led Congress to it's biggest-ever election victory in the recent assembly polls, winning 34 of the 40 seats and retained power for the second consecutive term.
Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) could win only five seats and Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) one.
The new 12-member ministry includes seven cabinet ministers and four ministers of state besides the CM. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by former chief minister Zoramthanga of MNF, Lok Sabha member CL Ruala, MLAs, top Congress leaders, former ministers and legislators.
This was the fifth time Lal Thanhawla was sworn-in as chief minister.
He first became the chief minister in 1984 and continued till 1986 when the Mizo Peace Accord was signed to end insurgency in the state. He then resigned to make way for former Mizo rebel leader Laldenga to become chief minister in the interim government — a coalition of MNF and Congress in which he was the deputy chief minister. Mizoram became a state in 1987.
Lal Thanhawla again became chief minister in 1989, 1993, and 2008.
