RAIPUR: Ten women of 85, who tried their luck in the recent assembly polls in Chhattisgarh, managed to emerge trumps. Their number has gone down by one as compared to 2008 assembly polls
Of the 10 women candidates, who registered victory from their constituencies, six from BJP, took a lead over four from Congress, including Renu Jogi, former chief minister Ajit Jogi's wife.
However, both the mayors pitted against BJP's heavy-weight ministers failed to mark their maiden entry.
While health minister Amar Agrawal defeated mayor Vani Rao in Bilaspur constituency, with more than 15,000 votes, in Raipur (south), where mayor Kiranmayee Nayak was pitted against tourism minister Brijmohan Agrawal had to face a major setback with a defeat of huge margin of around 35,000 votes.
However, BJP's few new faces of women candidates have done the magic and have emerged as winners, including Champa Devi Pawle at Bharatpur-Sonhat constituency (ST), who defeated Gulab Kamro of Congress by a margin of 4,608 votes.
Suniti Satyanand Rathiya from Lailunga constituency took over Congress' sitting MLA Hridayaram Rathuya by remarkable 14,201 votes.
Another new player Sarojani Banjare of BJP has routed Thaneshwar Patila of Congress by 4,684 votes from Dongarhgarh seat of Rajnandgaon constituency.
Similarly Congress' sitting MLA Padma Ghansyam Manhar had to bite the dust in the women-dominated Sarangarh seat in Raigarh, with a margin of 15,844 and was defeated by Kerabai Manhar.
A considerable difference of at least 2,000 votes was noticed between all the winning women candidates and those who lost. BJP's another face Ramshila Sahu, who defeated sitting MLA Pratima Chandrakar of Congress won with a mere margin of 2,979 votes from Durg (rural) constituency.
From Basna seat Rupkumari Chaudhary won against sitting Congress's MLA and a member of erstwhile royal family Devendra Bahadur Singh by 6,239 votes.
Incidentally, all four women winners of Congress have outdone all men contestants from their constituencies.
Wife of slain Congress leader Mahendra Karma's wife Devti Karma, wrested Dantewada seat from BJP's Bhima Mandavi by a margin of 5,987 votes, perhaps taking advantage of the sympathy wave in Bastar division.
Even Renu Jogi, who contested from Kota constituency defeated BJP's Kashira Sahu by more than 5,000 votes. In Manpur-mohala seat of Rajnandgaon constituency, Congress' Tej Kunwar Netam defeated Bhojesh Shah of BJP by 956 votes.
Anila Bhediya winning from Dondilohara constituency, who was pitted against against BJP's Horilal Rawte, defeated him by 19,735 votes. Congress's Tej Kunwar Netam has defeated BJP's Bhojesh Shah from Mohla Manpur seat of Rajnandgaon district by 956 votes.
