Mamma mia!
She has played the mom in many TV soaps. But Apara Mehta says she's game for more.
"I hate to see even one streak of silver in my hair," says actress Apara Mehta. So, she'd rather let her lustrous tresses show a tint of henna brown. And look like a woman who takes care of herself. That is Mehta for you.
Calling herself a 200 per cent 'conceited Naagar' from Bhavnagar, she's not only proud that women in her community have been bold and enterprising, she's also elated that television stars today can afford to say 'no' to stereotype roles coming their way from Bollywood.
1x1 polls

* Adulation! ha!: I was the entire country's mom at one point of time. I never thought television could give me this kind of popularity. I wasn't that old but the formula of the serial worked.
* Proud to be an Indian: In England a fan greeted me with a peck on my cheek. She was half Turkish and half Black. She didn't understand a word of Hindi but she simply loved Indian serials.
* Family snub: My daughter Khushali will graduate this year. She doesn't even watch my serials. My mother and my two masis are big fans of other Saas bahu serials but then they do keep track of mine.
* Film roles: I did three films and am happy I did them. They helped me immensely as an artist since they satisfied my creative urge. And the film-makers mattered. I have worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Abbas Mastan and Priyadarshan.
* Dancing days: I recently danced to 'Dhol bajne lagaa' and managed to pull it off. The dance was a little difficult for me. I am 43-year-old after all.
