NEW DELHI:
Achanta Sharath Kamal was declared the winner of the TOISA Table Tennis Player of the Year Award at the inaugural Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) held at Gurgaon on Thursday.
Sharath Kamal was the unanimous choice of the jury in the Table Tennis category that included the likes of Ankita Das, Soumyajit Ghosh and Amalraj Anthony.
Sharath Kamal, India's top-ranked male paddler, plays for German club Borussia Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga (table tennis).
He is a three-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist - including a gold in the singles events at Melbourne in 2006. He missed the bronze medal after losing in the play-offs of the 2014 CWG in Glasgow.
However, he did win the silver medal in the men's doubles category, teaming up with Anthony Amalraj. The 32-year-old, who spends most of his time in Germany, is aiming at breaking into the top-30 of the world rankings.
