Mutaz Barshim aims for first Qatari gold in high jump
Mutaz Barshim is expected to start favourite in men's high jump. Two notable absentees will be Ivan Ukhov, unable to defend his title because of sanctions against Russian athletes, and Italy's European and world indoor champion Gianmarco Tamberi, out injured. Barshim has the world's best mark of 2.40m and perhaps no better chance to become his country's first ever Olympic gold medallist after bagging bronze in London. Canada's current world champion Derek Drouin and two former world champions in the shape of Ukrainian Bogdan Bondarenko and Bahamian Donald Thomas will also be out for a podium place

Genzebe Dibaba targets 1500m
Ethiopian world record holder Genzebe Dibaba is the racer to watch in the women's 1500m. The race was badly tainted by doping in the London Games, with six of the top nine having been proved to be doping cheats. Dibaba will look to dispel any worries despite her coach Jama Aden having been arrested in Spain as part of an investigation into drugs trafficking
