England make India toil hard for a draw

Prior to the start of the India v England first Test match at Rajkot, if some had said India would be struggling to save the Test match on the final day, the response would have been that of utter disdain. But India found themselves reeling in the final session of the final day of the first Test. In chase of 310, India were in trouble at 71 for four with a minimum of 26.3 overs more to negotiate. And if it was not for skipper Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin’s 47-run stand for the fifth wicket, India might have had to go in to the second Test at Visakhapatnam trailing 0-1 in the series. The result was a draw, but way too close than what was expected by and large. India finished with 172 for six at the end of the match.

Both captai nshake hands and that is the end of it. India finish with 172/6 in chase of 310. Kohli 49*, Rashid 3/64

Saha departs - India six down
Wirddiman Saha adds further anxiety departing for nine off 13 balls. He came down the track and hit it straight back to the bowler – Rashid. India six down with 6.2 overs to go

India require 261 more runs in 31 overs, England 8 wickets to claim victory

England made the day five proceedings of the first India v England Test match at Rajkot just a tad interesting declaring their second innings at 260 for three, thus setting India target of 310 in a maximum of 49 overs. A dangling carrot for sure for captain Virat Kohli and coach Anil Kumble to ponder over for a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. And keeping in mind the Rajkot track, that looked like a possibility, but when tea was taken, India meandered to 49 losing two wickets, thus dispensing any hopes of a mad dash to the target. India now require 261 more run to win from a maximum of 31 overs, England need eight more wickets to win; but a draw seems the most likely result.

1000 Test runs in India for Cook

And what a shot to bring it up. Dancing down the track to Ashwin and launches a picture perfect inside out drive over the covers to the boundary. He becomes the first Englishman and fourth overall batsman to score over 1000 runs in India

Oh what has Root done - top edges and departs - England 192/2
Implosion on the cards here? Root goes for a slog sweep and blobs the ball high in the air. Saha takes an easy catch. He departs for 4

200 run lead for England. In their second innings they have scored 159/0

Fantastic display of batting skills here. Generally it is said for a successful opening pair complimenting each other is the key. But here, debutant Hameed is exactly like Cook, only right-handed though. Cook is known to be resolute, Hameed is matching his skipper in that trait. Test match batting at its best, but no quite sure the crowd and the audience who have been fed with T20 cricket will be enjoying this.

Advantage England after taking 163-run lead over India at the end of Day 4

If it was not for Ravichandran Ashwin's valiant 139-ball 70-run knock, England would have had a lead of over 100 runs and a definite advantage in the first India v England Test at Rajkot with one more day to go. England did eventually take a lead of 49, bundling out India to 488 and went on score 114 without any loss in their second innings, extending the overall lead over India to 163.

After India ended day two of the first India v England Test match at Rajkot on 63 for no loss, day three was going to be a battle of attrition with India primed to make England toil. Even though the start didn’t go as expected with India losing Gautam Gambhir (29) in the second over of the day, Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara ensured that Indian did not suffer any further damage in the first session as the duo motored along and combined for an unbeaten 94-run stand. India managed 99 runs in the session and when lunch was taken India (162 for one) were 375 runs adrift of England's first innings total of 537.
