Amol Kolhe, the lead actor of the controversial Marathi film 'Marathi Tigers' Amol Kolhe has criticized the attempts of the Karnataka government and Kannada organizations for not allowing the movie to release in border area of the state. "If the government doesnt allow showing the film in theaters and multiplexes, we will show the film in tent cinemas (
tambu cinema)," says Kolhe.
He asked what will happen if Kannada films are banned in Maharashtra, adding that several theatres in
Maharashtra play Kannada movies.
Karnataka intends to seek a nationwide ban on the release of this film. The state govt thinks that film focuses on the sensitive Maharashtra-Karnataka border issue. Kolhe clarified that the movie releasing on February 5 does not contain the subject of border dispute but it depicts the feelings of Marathi lovers in the border area who are facing atrocities. Kolhe is also an active member of
Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra government is supporting the film, which has also got a clearance from the Censor Board.
The movie trailer and video clips, which are being circulated on smart phones in the districts bordering Karnataka and Maharashtra, allegedly deride Kannadigas, and this had led to tension last week in Belagavi. The police conducted meetings with Kannada groups and Marathi speaking people to maintain peace. Belagavi (Karnataka) has a sizeable population of Marathis who are keen on the city being included under the Maharashtra territory.
