How often do you see three generations of artistes from the same family perform together? Especially if they are mother, daughter and grandaughter? Jaipur audiences were lucky to witness one such evening when singer
Usha Uthup took to the stage with her daughter Anjali Kurian and grand-daughter
Ayesha. They not only displayed their musical skills, the trio even indulged in a chit-chat session at the event.
Usha was her usual charming self, sharing anecdotes from her 44 years in the music industry and her initial days of struggle. She candidly answered every question asked by her fans. “Today you might see me as a popular singer, but I have had my fair share of highs and lows in my career of 44 years,” she said.
With no professional training in music, Usha had started her career as a nightclub singer and it took her years to find a place in Bollywood with her unusual voice.
Sharing stories from her childhood days, she said, “You will be surprised to know that I was thrown out of the music class in school for the different texture of my voice. I never took any lessons in music but inherited the musical legacy as everybody in the family had a love for music. But I want my granddaughter to go through proper training in music and prove her prowess.”
The mother-daughter-granddaughter trio rendered old and new songs like Bindiya Chamkegi, last year’s hit number Tum Hi Ho and some English numbers including Diamonds. Adding a Rajasthani touch, the famous folk song Anjann Ki Seeti Mein Mharo Mann Dole came as a surprise.
