GURGAON: The traffic police department has claimed that the various steps taken by it against drunk driving in the past year has brought down the number of road accidents, especially during the night.The traffic police in 2011 issued twice the number of challans issued in 2010.
In 2011, 14,692 challans were issued compared to 7,360 in 2010. About 300 drunk drivers were arrested and 13 sent to jail apart from being fined Rs 2,000 each.
DCP (traffic) Bharti Arora said, "Drunken driving is the root cause behind most road rage cases. The department is strict against the practice and will soon renew the drive. We will also pursue old cases in courts."
